Bulletins

25 May

As usual, there were plenty of red Sandhurst vests in races over the weekend.

At the Hook Fun Runs, we came to the conclusion that Sandhurst would do very well in the 6 mile version…I'm not too sure about the 2.5 mile though, as that was won in sub 15 mins by a 12 year old – perhaps not the best thing for confidence! Nevertheless, we did come home with 2 prizes – Amy Loftenes-Ratcliffe won the Under 8s in the 2.5 mile race and Jenny won the women's 10 mile title. In addition, there were some splendid pbs – Dave Breslin and James Casey spring to mind…Well done to all of you… (Results at end).

Other Joggers made the trip to the Woodley 10k. Keith Snook managed to get amongst the Reading Road Runners (who had 13 in the first 22) to take 14 th place…

Keith Snook – 37.37

Jeff Culkin – 43.59

Clare Beckwith – 48.28

Jennifer Holden - 51.38

Peak District Relay (13/14 June)

If you are on Alan Kirby's list (hopefully you know who you are), then you need to pay a deposit asap for the Station Hotel. Please email me or Alan if you don't have the details.

Runnymede Relays (Sat 28 June)

I've got 24 names down at the moment (I think), so will be entering 4 Sandhurst teams. If you would like to run, but haven't told me yet, then please let me know – if we get enough for another team then that would be great. Otherwise, you may have to go on standby…

Weekend Away (28/29 Nov)

There are still some deposits outstanding. Please can you let me or Jenny have £25 per adult as soon as possible. There are also a couple of spare beds still available, so please let me know if you interested in going…

Forthcoming Events:

Woodland 5 – Wed 28 May

Yateley 10k – Wed 4 June

Pub Run – Mon 9 June (Frimley – Thai Orchid)

Handicap – Wed 11 June

Oh, and this is your last chance to submit articles for the Sandhurst Newsletter. Please let myself or Mally Cron have your efforts by the end of the bank holiday weekend.

Yours in sport

11-5-2008

Well done to those of you running over the weekend.

Firstly, there was a super effort from four of our joggers who ventured across to the Isle of Wight to run the annual marathon in scorching 26c heat. Erol's warm weather training has obviously paid off though, as he seemed to be least affected by the heat, finishing in a magnificent time to take 12th place overall. Unfortunately, the heat took its toll on Nick Stock who had to pull out at 20 miles – let's hope he has a speedy recovery. Results below:

Erol Ali – 3.29.12 (12 th place, 4 th vet)|

Andy Summerkskill – 4.57.15

Liz Morris – 5.11.18 (7 th lady)

Undeterred by comments in the week that the Alton 10 is one of the toughest races around, Jon Payne still made the trip yesterday. His time of 1.08.31 placed him just outside the top 50 and shows he is continuing his good form. Roll on the summer 10ks…

Finally, a few of us decided that an early 5 mile jaunt around Marlow was a good way to spend a Sunday morning. Well, at least we were home for morning coffee! Results below:

Graham Robinson – 26.33 (3 rd )

Mark FS – 29.58

Jenny Gray – 31.51 (9 th Lady)

Dave Breslin – 34.22

Ray Hale – 34.45

Ray Woodman – 38.11

Alan Cooper – 40.19

Runnymede Relays (Sat 28 June – 12 noon)

A 6 leg relay consisting of 3 x 5.25 mile and 3 x 2.75 mile legs. (max 3 senior men in each team). Please let me know if you would like to run. I've got the following runners provisionally down for this.

Liz Morris, Nina Cron, Dave Breslin, James Ratcliffe, Stuart Boswell, Richard Johnson, Mark FS, Jenny Gray, Graham Robinson, Erol Ali, Nick Jacobs, Jon Payne, Brendan Cottrell, Graham Kelly, Jo Newman, Royston Crandley, Mike Hewison, Martin Powell.

Brickmakers Relay – Sat 6 September

This is a 10 stage marathon relay. More details to follow, but put the date in your diary…

Upcoming Events :

Mon 12 May – Pub Run (Golden Pot) – Eversley (7.15 for 7.30 start)

Wed 14 May – Club Handicap (Broadmoor)

Sun 18 May – Hook 10

Wed 28 May – Woodland 5

Wed 4 June – Yateley 10km (Race 1) – we still need more volunteers…

1)  London Marathon bus
The Sandhurst Joggers runners/spectators bus to/from the London Marathon (13th April) is filling up fast.   If you want to reserve a seat (for which there is no charge to club members) and are not on the list below please contact me as soon as possible, and in any case not later than Monday 17th March.  After that date vacant places will be allocated to non-members (who pay £12 a seat), of whom the waiting-list is growing so all the seats are likely to be quickly taken.
The bus will leave Frogmore at 6:30 am (it cannot make intermediate stops after leaving Frogmore) and it will drop runners and spectators close to the marathon start. It will return to central London to pick up very close to the finish at (about) 4:30 pm, returning to Frogmore.
The following Sandhurst Joggers members, and only they, have already reserved seats on the bus:-

Christine Armstrong Clare Beckwith James Brennan Royston Crandley Jason Dalton Sabine el Bacha John Featherstone Martin Gigg Serena Gigg Maria Greedus Rob Hewison Nick Jacobs Robert Littlejohn Pat Marshall Jo Newman James Ratcliffe Tim Rivers Sally Swift Jill Thomas If you are not on this list (you may be one of those who were undecided when I last asked) and want a seat, either to run or as a spectator, please contact me as soon as possible.
This does  not  apply to marathon marshals. They will travel on a separate bus from Farnborough station. They will be advised of the details of their bus closer to the time.

2) Reading Half-Marathon
Several members are seeking places in the Reading Half-Marathon.  If you have a place but are unable to run (or know of anyone who is in that situation) and are prepared to informally pass it on to someone else please contact Jenny & Graham < events@sandhurstjoggersjoggers.org.uk > or me and we will try to put you in touch.

) Cross-Country: Thames Valley League, 24th Feb
With two races to go, Sandhurst Joggers are a tantalising two points (SJ 74, RRR 76) behind Reading Road Runners in the league. If we can muster enough of our top runners (are you there Jamie, Richard, Martin, Mark, Chris?) we can beat Reading this year.
The next race is Metros' at Ruislip on Sunday week, 24th February at 11 am. Though the most distant event in miles, it is still less than an hour's driving time away and, as usual, we will meet at Frogmore to share cars for the drive. If you wish to travel with this group please be in Frogmore lower carpark (by the road) in time to leave at 9 am. Parking at the event is limited so it is important that we are there with plenty of time to spare.
After a two year break Metros have found a new venue for their event in Mad Bess Wood, a couple of miles north of Ruislip (and only a mile from their former race venue). Brief directions are at the foot of this section (in blue ). Fuller directions, with a map, are on the club website ("home" page, in the "News" column, second item down). If you are, or might be, driving I recommend you print these to take with you. The suggested car-park has a limited capacity so please get there in plenty of time as the overflow car-parks are 15 minutes walk from the start.
Metros tell us that their new course is three laps and is "suitable for spikes, but studs are the best option" (myself, if I get to run, I'll be in my trusty off-road shoes). Three laps means there is a chance of lapping, so slower runners please listen carefully for, and keep well out of the way of, faster runners approaching from behind during the latter stages of the race. The first of them, of course (provided he doesn't get lost again) should be Graham!
It makes life much easier for me (but doesn't commit you) if I know who to expect, so if you plan to run please let me know as soon as possible. This applies particularly to those at the front of the pack (you know who you are) who will/may score points for the club.
After Metros the final Thames Valley league event is Reading Road Runners' on 16th March at their usual venue, Bearwood College near Wokingham.
Directions : Take the M3 (or M4) to the M25. Head north on the M25 to the M40. Turn right towards London on the M40, which shortly becomes the A40. At Swakeleys roundabout (2.7 miles after leaving the M25) turn left onto the B467 (Swakeleys Rd, signposted Ickenham). Take the second exit at the first roundabout (continuing on the B 467) then, about half a mile after leaving the A 40, turn left at a mini-roundabout into Breakspear Road South. Continue under a railway bridge, do not turn right at the pub into Breakespear Rd (as we did for the previous venue), but continue ahead (north) onto Breakespear Rd North. The car park is approx 1/2 mile on the left. OS Map Ref for the car-park is TQ 072 891 . Journey time 45-55 minutes. ___________________________________________________________________________
2) Cross-Country: ARC Event at Petersfield, 30th March
It would be a splendid finale to an excellent cross-country season if we could get as many of our team as possible together for for ARC (Association of Running Clubs) first annual cross-country race near Petersfield on Sunday 30th March. If we have sufficient numbers we will hire a minibus (or larger) to travel to/from the event.
I know little about the course except that it is "challenging" and about five miles. It is in Queen Elizabeth Country Park, on the A3 south of Petersfield. There's not a lot of flat country round there, so I think we can expect plenty of hills.
We need to enter as individuals , so please see the entry form on the website (follow the Cross-Country link and scroll to the bottom of the page). When you have entered let me know so that I can organise the transport.

11-Feb-2008

The Sandhurst Joggers Tuesday run has long been promulgated as being for "beginners and those returning from injury". However in the last couple of years but it has become the most popular club run of the week, with up to 50 runners. It appears that this is largely because many people prefer to run at 6:30 and/or from Sandhurst. The result of this is that the unfortunate beginners and slower runners – for whom the run was originally intended – are being overwhelmed and sometimes put off by the number and apparent expertise of the runners around them.
In an effort to relieve these Tuesday crowds Paul Crate has been leading a new, and up to now and unofficial, group at  6:30 pm  from  Sandhurst  on  Monday  evenings.  This is not a "fast" nor a long run (about 8–10 Km / 5–6 miles in 50-60 minutes) with looping as normal to accommodate slower runners.  It is very similar, in fact, to the normal faster group on Tuesday, and would be an excellent step up from Tuesday's run to Thursday's.
So if you regularly run with the faster Tuesday group Jenny, Paul, the less-experienced Tuesday runners and the club itself would be very pleased if you could, whenever possible, run with the new 6:30 Monday group instead. Paul has undertaken to lead the group regularly for the next six weeks, and as often as possible thereafter.  If it is well supported it will be discussed at the AGM on 17th March and, if approved, will become a regular club run.
To repeat - the new run is at  6:30 on Monday evenings from Sandhurst Memorial Car Park  (directions are on the club website, click on " Where and when we meet " in the left-hand menu, then on " Sandhurst Remorial  (sic)  Park Map " under " How to get there " on the right)
The existing 7:30 Monday run from Frogmore will be unaffected , and will continue to meet at, and run from, Frogmore at 7:30 .  Please continue to support this run too

Apologies if you took someone else's number can you let us know who you swapped with. ARC Cross Country: The ARC National Cross Country is in Portsmouth on the 30 th  March. We would like to take as many Sandhurst Joggers as possible. The club has offered to pay for transport so we will probably get a minibus so we can all go down together. If you are interested please enter (see Sandhurst Joggers website) the race (5 miles) and then let us know if you are going so we can get numbers for transport. This should be an excellent club event and a good opportunity to rank yourself against other ARC club members in the country.

Please do this ASAP.

Sport Relief.

The committee would like to do something for Sports Relief – we have decided that the runs that take place on Monday 10 th  March and Tuesday 11 th  March should be dedicated to Sport Relief. The theme set by the BBC for this year is RED SOCKS so we are asking you to ……….. yes you've guessed it – wear a RED SOCK!! and come down to the run with a donation for Sport Relief. Sport Relief is a sister charity to Comic Relief which ‘helps vulnerable people living incredible tough lives both at home in the UK and across the worlds poorest countries' (quote from sport relief website). If you want to know more about the charity then please look at  http://www.sportrelief.com/about . We thank you in advance for your generosity and participation in this event.

5th - Feb - 2008

Congratulations to all those who ran in Sunday's Thames Valley Cross-Country League race at Lightwater. ?For the second time this season Sandhurst Joggers came first ?in the event, beating our arch-rivals, Reading Road Runners into second place. ?With two races remaining in the series we are a tantalizing two points behind Reading in the league. The third club, Bracknell Forest Runners, is a comfortable ten points behind us (Reading 76, Sandhurst 74, Bracknell 64), with ten more clubs below them. ?Full, though as yet unofficial, results are attached below my signature.

Special mention must go to Graham Robinson. A mile into the race he was so far ahead of the rest of the field that he arrived at a junction before the marshals, took a wrong turn, and found himself behind about 100 others when he rejoined the course! ?Despite that, in the remaining four miles he fought back to finish in fourth place. ?Jenny Gray was, as ever, our first lady and third lady overall. Our scorers (first seven men and three women) were Graham Robinson, Keith Snook, Mark Fallowfield-Smith, James Ratcliffe, Jon Payne, Andy Stevens, Carl Bradshaw, Jenny Gray, Lucy Clayton, Jo Newman.?

Special mention is due, too, to new member Helen Antram who, in her first cross-country, was 15th lady overall and 4th S.J. lady. ?I must also mention cross-country first-timers Faye Bosley & Janet Ford. ?And two more of our ladies, Liesl Padbury and Sarah Allcock, were running in their?second-cross-country only a few weeks (Sarah) or months (Liesl) since starting running as absolute beginners!... ?The cross-countries really aren't just for elite runners.

The next cross-country league race is in three weeks, on Sunday 24th February, followed three weeks later by the last on 16th March. It certainly won't be easy to overhaul Reading in the league, but it is possible. Please make every effort to be available to run in these last two races.

***********************************

We are also hoping to enter a club team in the inaugural ARC (Association of Running Clubs) cross-country race in Queen Elizabeth Country Park, in the lovely South Downs near Petersfiled, on Sunday 30th March. This would be a splendid way to round off an excellent cross-country season. Entry is ?7, and entry forms will shortly be on the club website. If you plan to enter please let me know. I'll send out more details a little closer to the day.

? Rob Hewison
