A regular series profiling members of the Sandhurst Joggers committee.
Name and committee role:
Janice Alves de Sousa – Membership Secretary
Why Sandhurst Joggers?
I have lived in Sandhurst for most of my life.
What got you into outdoor running?
Keeping fit for lacrosse.
What do you enjoy/dislike about running?
The joy about being able to go out when and where you want, and then feeling so great later on.
The days when you don’t feel like running, but often turn out to be the best.
Favourite event/distance?
Off road marathons. 10 -20 mile races
Clarendon, Peak District Relay Race
How has running changed for you since you started?
Due to knee injury, am currently not running – though will do so in the future. Club has completely changed with new people and the week had a definite pattern; runs well attended and everyone knew everyone. We used to meet in the corridor of Frogmore leisure centre and quite often went up for a drink in the bar after showering. Of course times change.
Best/worst running experience?
Doing a 7.5-minute mile down the Reading Road/cracking sub 4-hour marathons. Having to stop, queue and go to the loo in the Chicago marathon (4:10)
Running aspirations?
Keep running at a reasonable standard
Bucket list event?
Probably none nowadays, but did qualify for Boston and then got injured.
Most recent and next race/event?
Last race with New York, aged 63, 4:02.
No events planned, though a Park Run might be a goal.
Biggest running sin?
Was on a training run from home one winter’s evening. As I was coming down Park Road in Camberley there was a man lying in a hedge, and instead of seeing if he was all right I sped past and ignored him.
Anything else?
Being in Sandhurst Joggers has been such a big thing, though not so much now. So many things have evolved from the different people.
