On 21-22nd June 2024 the annual Light The Lakes even took place in the Lake District. The event commenced in 2012 and is supported by Police Officers, staff and retired personnel across the UK to remember colleagues who have died. The aim is to light all 214 of the Wainwright Peaks in Cumbria.
At 12.19am on Saturday 22nd June 2024 Sandhurst Jogger and Surrey Police Detective Simon Tigg started the ascent of St Sunday Crag along with five of his colleagues. The fell is 841 metres high. Simon navigated the route in darkness, rain and fog, reaching the top at 2.45am. The group co-ordinated the lighting of flares at 3am before descending the same route.
Simon said ‘I completed the inaugural Light the Lakes in 2012 and this was my second event. The journey up was hard going, but worth it. I’m not into hikes normally, but it had deep meaning. As the sun rose the views were spectacular. I reached the bottom around 5.20am.
Whilst the rest of the group were sleeping, not wanting to miss an opportunity, I went to beautiful Rothay Park Parkrun and finished in 27 minutes 49 seconds!
