Martian Race:
Well done to Monica Burbidge and Julie Graham for completing the 5/10k race. Here is how they found the event:
Monica said:
‘This was an event organised by Woking Lions with proceeds going to local charities. I’d heard of it in past years through Facebook and thought I’d give it a go this year, the fourth one. There were three distances at the event: 5k, 10k and half-marathon, all starting at 9am at MacLaren Park just outside Woking. Julie Graham did the 5k and I did 10k and we had a nice chat before the start, once I managed to find it 15 min before the start with the help of another runner, as there were no signs to the event village for pedestrians that I could see! It was a lovely trail route starting in the park and then heading out on to Horsell Common with varied terrain – flattish, gently undulating in some places and with a couple of bigger hills thrown in, plus some quite narrow twistier paths as well. There were three water stations on the 10k route, with paper cups provided. I’m guessing that most Lions members are non-runners or infrequent marshals, as I didn’t find comments of “Come on” quite early on and then “Nearly there” with still a mile to go particularly encouraging!
Still, I made it to the finish without mishap (having woken with a calf cramp and it being quite a hot day), after passing someone who had taken a bad tumble and was being tended to by marshals. After an unexpected cheer from Tina Acock as I reached the finishing strait, I was rewarded with a nice wooden medal, a banana and more water in paper cups. Before heading to the free shuttle bus back to the train station, I had a chat with Majjid, the race director, who was very keen to hear my feedback and asked if I would do it again. I said I might, but on reflection it’s a yes’.
Julie said:
‘It was good and really lovely to see Monica at the start. An enjoyable, varied terrain route as Monica said. I understand how it would be difficult to have found as a pedestrian as it was a 20 minute walk from the car park alongside Fairoaks car park (something for future participants to make a note of) It was hot today, but it was enjoyable, I would recommend it and would definitely do it again’.
Pure Beginners course completion:
A big well done to our latest group of pure beginners who have managed to complete the weekly sessions, with the help and support from Lisa and Liz along with the brilliant volunteer supporters to run alongside. Some of us who joined Sandhurst Joggers did so through this course so we know how hard they work. Here they are at the Sandhurst parkrun in which they can put all their skills into practise! We of course hope to be seeing them at more parkrun or club runs on various days.

SJ Pub Runs:
The annual pub runs have been and are currently taking place, this provides a good opportunity to have a run, get to know the others you run with and enjoy some good food at the end of it all! The event on Tuesday was the one I attended and enjoyed catching up with other runners in which there was a good turn out.

Giants Head Marathon:
Well done to Jonathan Taylor for completing the event, here is how he found it:
‘Giant’s Head marathon done, the race I waited three years to do! I entered in 2019 then it got cancelled twice due to the pandemic. It was definitely worth the wait. Such a beautiful trail marathon and amazing scenery down in Dorset, including running past the famously rude Cerne Abbas giant. It was much cooler than previous years, but then it was pretty windy just to make sure it was no easier. The relentless hills made for some slow going but really pleased with my time. The medal is a bit rude and yes, it spins. A great tshirt and a buff made for a great goody bag, what’s not to like!’

Here are the Parkrun results for this week. Volunteers are always needed and if you are interested, have a look at your local Parkrun website page for more details. Well done to all the club runners with runs taking place all around the country. The results for this week are from the 25/06/2022:

Club Events for the week ahead…
View the Sandhurst Calendar here.
Monday:
Patrick Wadsworth will be taking the Monday Club run from Sandhurst Sports Centre leaving at 7:30 for 6 miles in an hour (distances and duration are Monday miles and minutes and bear passing resemblance to those in use at other times).
Tuesday:
The biggest club run of the week will as always offer multiple groups to cater for all abilities from beginners through to faster and more experienced runners. It’s perfect for novices and those coming back from injury or a long lay-off because you can start with an easy group and work your way upwards. The start time is 6:30pm as always this week from the regular start at Sandhurst Memorial Park.
Tuesday Intervals:
Alongside the Tuesday group runs is intervals and the venue varies but most weeks we meet at the Tythings, Yateley or at the Morgan Rec (where the handicap is), Crowthorne. The session can support with helping you get faster, building up endurance with the session being for all abilities and no-one is left behind.
Wednesday Day Run:
If you are struggling to run in the evenings, there is now a run from the Sandhurst Memorial Park at 12:30pm. Anyone of any ability can go and enjoy a run and a chat with a variety of routes.
Wednesday:
A run with Erol will contain hills, laughs, and a couple of wrong turns (normally), but you can guarantee you’ll end up at the car park eventually, and with a smile at the end of it all! Meet at Sandhurst Sports Centre at 7:15pm and lights and high vis clothing will be required. The run is a great way to improve fitness by running as a group at a slightly harder intensity.
Thursday:
Thursday is now a rest day from running for the club.
Friday:
Friday night is track night with 3 of our experienced coaches James, Carl and Newton, the sessions are for anyone to take part in and take place at Bracknell Leisure Centre. Book your place here https://membermojo.co.uk/sandhurstjoggers/store
Saturday:
Lots of members will be enjoying their weekly Parkrun fix at 9am on Saturday morning, if you’re thinking of going somewhere new then post on the Facebook page as there may be other members planning on running at the same place as you! Wherever you are parkrunning – Don’t forget your barcode!
Sunday:
The Sunday Lookout run with Scarlett. The Sunday morning run is off-road in the beautiful Swinley Forest. There is lots of chat, a few hills and the opportunity for coffee and more chat afterwards. It’s a really friendly and supportive group and all paces are catered for. Meet at the Lookout – near Go Ape – just before 9.00 for 90 minutes of fun!
Thanks for reading the Run Down, have a safe week of running and I’ll see you next week!
Please do let me know if you are doing any events, I can only report what I see on Strava and Facebook and I hope you appreciate there may be things I miss!
Ping me a message over the weekend and I will include it so others can see what we are doing and may be inspired to try a different event.
