London Marathon:

Well done to all of the runners and marshalls that took part in the annual London Marathon, I spoke with both runners and marshalls to see how they found the event:

Samantha McDonnell said

‘Had a great time marshalling at my first London Marathon. Met some great volunteers and runners. It is a long day, and my feet ache now on the coach home’.

Gabrielle Bassett, who completed the event virtually said:

‘Pouring with rain at 9am. Summer sun from midday! Good fun to do VLM with multiple people & less hassle than travelling up to London. Likely the only way to get the much coveted Classics Medal as it’s so difficult to get into the actual event’.

Blanche Barnes said:

‘This will forever be a stand-out day in my memory!

Background: this was my 2nd marathon, following Manchester in 2019, where I was in terrible pain with stress damage (only diagnosed months later). Roll on a couple years of intense physio and PT, getting better… then a broken ankle + deferral in 2021, restart Couch to 5K Nov 21, then this summer a dodgy hip + a rogue acupuncture needle, and you can imagine I was a bit uncertain of even making the start line.  With all these hiccups, I’d adopted the “Jeffing” structured method of run/walk, which were really helpful in the longer training runs as it delays fatigue and enables me to be less wonky for longer. Of course it’s slower than continuous running, but my goal was really to enjoy this one and get round in one piece.

I stayed in London the Saturday night for an easy journey from London Bridge – where I suddenly got very emotional at the enormity of it all – seeing all the dedicated Red/Green/Blue Wave signs to point runners to the right train, and then a motivational speech from the station announcer – all this laid on when we weren’t even anywhere near the start! I started in the very last Red Wave at 10.53, and duly followed my 30 sec run / 30 sec walk plan… that was quite challenging due to the congestion especially when the waves merged, so there was much weaving about, and also the noise sometimes made it hard to notice my Garmin alerts.

The first 16 miles or so were just brilliant with the crowds, the music, the big landmarks and I stopped a few times for photos & chat. I had some tiny stuffed animal toys attached to my hydration vest which I’d planned to give out to small children on the way, (anything for attention for my animal charity!). I only managed a few though as my hands became too wobbly to undo the safety pins, and anyway I was being massively upstaged by a full-on rhino I couldn’t shake off!

Somewhere just around Canary Wharf I started feeling really nauseous. I’d had loads of Tailwind from the start, maybe too much? I knew I’d been drinking too little in training so had actively tried to take on more on the day, but at this point I couldn’t face anything sweet so just kept going with water and salt sticks. Of course then my energy levels dropped, my legs started to hurt (though amazingly only from mile 19 – I’d only had time to train up to 18 so maybe that was psychological as uncharted territory), and I deviated quite a bit from my 30:30 ratios.

By 21-22, I was still nauseous, tired, in pain, & was starting to get miserable and tune out from my surroundings. But then I thought back to Manchester and realised that actually I was feeling a whole lot better this time, and that its ok to not feel 100 percent at this stage!  So it was a mental kick up the ass, turn your thoughts outwards to stop listening to the negative inner voices and niggles, re-engage with the epic crowds and surroundings to get that lift, remember all the positive encouragement you’ve had, just think its only the distance of the SJ handicap but with no hills! Finally into the Mall, where I managed not quite a sprint but at least to run the last 400m (one lap of Bracknell track in my head), chasing a giant purple nurse, (what else), and straight to the Best Finish Line Crew ever, truly the best feeling ever to see all those amazing SJ hustlers and medal hangers’.

Clarendon Marathon Relay:

Well done to Tamzin Evershed, Julian Rawcliffe, Gerry Mepham and Erol Ali for completing the relay event, here is how they got on:

‘Started out peeing it down. Ended up with beautiful sun and it was a really wonderful day’.

‘A lovely course. The only tricky bit was finding somewhere to park at Farley Mount. And we’ll pass over me adding 750m to my leg by not reading a clearly marked left arrow marker. A good team effort’.

Well done to Jonathan Taylor for completing the ‘Old Harry Ultra’ race, here is how he got on:

‘Last Sunday I ran the inaugural ‘Old Harry Ultra’, this race was a fund raiser for the very worthy Julia’s House Children’s Hospice and organised by Badger Trail Events. My run started in Sandbanks by the beach, and then followed the shoreline of Poole Harbour all the way round to Studland beach, just a tad under 35 miles away. A quick hop on the chain link ferry and I was back to the start. What a day! It was torrential rain for the first half and had a comedy moment where a lorry went through a puddle and absolutely drenched me. Second half, the sun came out and it got hot, I managed to get sunburnt. The scenery was varied and interesting and the route was just brilliant although quite a challenge in the second half – mud, hills and sand made for some slow miles. At the end there was a really nice medal, coffee and a slice of cake! What more can you ask for! I really enjoyed this run and had such a great day out. Badger gave us nearly 12 hours to get this race done and plenty were walking the whole thing, making it a really inclusive event’.

Club Events for the week ahead…

View the Sandhurst Calendar here.

Monday:

Patrick Wadsworth will be taking the Monday Club run from Sandhurst Sports Centre leaving at 7:30 for 6 miles in an hour (distances and duration are Monday miles and minutes and bear passing resemblance to those in use at other times).

Tuesday:

The biggest club run of the week will as always offer multiple groups to cater for all abilities from beginners through to faster and more experienced runners. It’s perfect for novices and those coming back from injury or a long lay-off because you can start with an easy group and work your way upwards. The start time is 6:30pm as always this week from the regular start at Sandhurst Memorial Park.

Tuesday Intervals:

Alongside the Tuesday group runs is intervals and the venue varies but most weeks we meet at the Tythings, Yateley or at the Morgan Rec (where the handicap is), Crowthorne. The session can support with helping you get faster, building up endurance with the session being for all abilities and no-one is left behind.

Wednesday Day Run:

If you are struggling to run in the evenings, there is now a run from the Sandhurst Memorial Park at 12:30pm. Anyone of any ability can go and enjoy a run and a chat with a variety of routes.

Wednesday:

A run with Erol will contain hills, laughs, and a couple of wrong turns (normally), but you can guarantee you’ll end up at the car park eventually, and with a smile at the end of it all! Meet at Sandhurst Sports Centre at 7:15pm and lights and high vis clothing will be required. The run is a great way to improve fitness by running as a group at a slightly harder intensity.

Thursday:

Thursday is now a rest day from running for the club.

Friday:

Friday night is track night with 3 of our experienced coaches James, Carl and Newton, the sessions are for anyone to take part in and take place at Bracknell Leisure Centre. Book your place here https://membermojo.co.uk/sandhurstjoggers/store

Saturday:

Lots of members will be enjoying their weekly Parkrun fix at 9am on Saturday morning, if you’re thinking of going somewhere new then post on the Facebook page as there may be other members planning on running at the same place as you! Wherever you are parkrunning – Don’t forget your barcode!

Sunday:

The Sunday Lookout run with Scarlett. The Sunday morning run is off-road in the beautiful Swinley Forest. There is lots of chat, a few hills and the opportunity for coffee and more chat afterwards. It’s a really friendly and supportive group and all paces are catered for. Meet at the Lookout – near Go Ape – just before 9.00 for 90 minutes of fun!

Thanks for reading the Run Down, have a safe week of running and I’ll see you next week!

Please do let me know if you are doing any events, I can only report what I see on Strava and Facebook and I hope you appreciate there may be things I miss!

Ping me a message over the weekend and I will include it so others can see what we are doing and may be inspired to try a different event.
