Home Cross Country Volunteers:

As a club we run in the Thames Valley Cross Country League and as part of that we organise and host our very own cross-country event – this year’s event is on Sunday 28th November at Lord Wandsworth College, Hook.

WE NOW NEED YOUR HELP to ensure our event goes ahead successfully and safely, so that the good name of the club continues to thrive.

To host the cross country we need you to volunteer to help us in one (or more) of the following ways:

•             Set up the course

•             Make sandwiches for the race

•             Set up the hospitality area

•             Organise parking cars

•             Marshal the race

•             Serve tea, coffee, sandwiches, and cake

•             Pack down the course

In total we have 90 roles that need filling across the weekend, this could be YOU OR MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY, this is your opportunity to GIVE BACK TO YOUR CLUB.

Throughout the cross-country season there are many opportunities for you to race, but for this, our home event, we put restrictions on who can run. Our Cross-Country Captains Nigel and Gabbi Bassett will email those they wish to see represent the club at this event – if you have received the Bassett’s email, please DO NOT volunteer to help, they need you! For everyone else, please continue to read this email and see what you need to do.

Any member who turns up on race day expecting to run and is not part of Nigel and Gabbi’s scoring team will be asked to volunteer; only the official scoring team will be permitted to run in the race.

Please complete this form if you want to volunteer: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScIu4xqhNw2Riwe5RSWacMa9Ej4wuqFAXfqsYHW6EFQneqKEw/viewform

Events from the past week:

Manchester Marathon:

Well done to Alison Jones, Sharon Burfield, Fusi Motsamai and Jonathan Taylor for completing the Manchester Marathon!

I caught up with some of them in regards to how they found the event, Alison said:

‘Like so many other large scale events, in the last 2 years, the Manchester marathon had been re, re, re-scheduled so here we were now with just a week between London and Manchester, what could we do, run them both, of course.

Having run Manchester previously and my husband being a bit of a cricket fan, I knew there was a hotel virtually on the start / finish line so each time I changed our hotel reservation I kept trying to get us into this hotel, it was always full, until the October date was confirmed and I managed to get us in result!

With staggered starts Sharon was starting 30mins before me at 10.45 so she headed off in what turned out to be a beautiful warm day (Manchester in October)!

Followed by me 30 minutes later. For some reason the starts were delayed by a few minutes but eventually off I go.

As I run over the starting mat I think “darn” (not really but you can guess) a groin / quad issue I had after London decided this was a good time to make it’s presence felt, so I had 3 choices, pull out, take it really slow and hope for the best or carry on as best as I could (answers on a postcard)

Due to the route change we spent a bit of the run in the City centre, I didn’t really see the point of this, the original route was already good. As ever the support was fantastic, a bit hillier than I remember but a great Marathon which ticked all the boxes, not unlike London but taken less seriously.

As I was approaching the finish line, I imagined Sharon back in the room, showered, eating sausage rolls and quaffing Champagne (essential recovery fuel after a marathon) but since I had my name on my shirt I seemed to hear a lot of Alison? But one of those voices was Sharon who came in just after me, this time her gremlin was a  calf pain, so there we were, a couple of pig headed eejits who would not give in!

What a journey back to the hotel, medal, t-shirt, through the fence met by security show hotel pass complimentary slippers, water, fruit, lift to room, shower, sausage rolls, champagne sorted’.

Jonathan said:

‘Starting in Old Trafford near the Man Utd stadium, I had an enjoyable run around Manchester. The course took in central Manchester and the famous buildings of Deansgate and Piccadilly, before heading out around the various districts of Manchester. The course was mostly flat and entirely on road, which should make for a fast run however I made the classic mistake of setting off way too fast. It made for a brutal second half, however the locals came out to support and cheer the runners on the whole way, it was a brilliant atmosphere. The finish was at the old Trafford cricket ground, where a nice tshirt, quality bling and a beer was waiting for me! This big city marathon is one of the biggest in Europe at 35,000 runners and it was very well organised. I’d recommend this as a first marathon due to the flat course and amazing support’.

Here are the Parkrun results for this week. Volunteers are always needed and if you are interested, have a look at your local Parkrun website page for more details. Well done to all the club runners with runs taking place all around the country. The results for this week is from the 09/10/2021.

Club Events for the week ahead…

Monday:

Patrick Wadsworth will be taking the Monday Club run from Sandhurst Sports Centre leaving at 7:30 for 6 miles in an hour (distances and duration are Monday miles and minutes and bear passing resemblance to those in use at other times).

Tuesday:

The biggest club run of the week will as always offer multiple groups to cater for all abilities from beginners through to faster and more experienced runners. It’s perfect for novices and those coming back from injury or a long lay-off because you can start with an easy group and work your way upwards. The start time is 6:30pm as always this week from the regular start at Sandhurst Memorial Park.

Tuesday Intervals:

Alongside the Tuesday group runs is intervals and the venue varies but most weeks we meet at the Tythings, Yateley or at the Morgan Rec (where the handicap is), Crowthorne. The session can support with helping you get faster, building up endurance with the session being for all abilities and no-one is left behind.

Wednesday Day Run:

If you are struggling to run in the evenings, there is now a run from the Sandhurst Memorial Park at 12:30pm. Anyone of any ability can go and enjoy a run and a chat with a variety of routes.

Wednesday:

Wednesday is a club run with Andrea Vincent and Sharon Burfield. The session is for an hour which is full of friendly chat and no-one is left behind with everyone welcome.

Thursday:

A run with Erol will contain hills, laughs, and a couple of wrong turns (normally), but you can guarantee you’ll end up at the car park eventually, and with a smile at the end of it all! Meet at Sandhurst Memorial Park at 7:30pm and lights and high vis clothing will be required. The run is a great way to improve fitness by running as a group at a slightly harder intensity.

Friday:

Friday night is track night with 3 of our experienced coaches James, Carl and Newton and the venue varies depending on where the coaches are leading the session from and the focus on the sessions. These sessions are for anyone who wants to improve their speed and endurance for ru

Saturday:

Lots of members will be enjoying their weekly Parkrun fix at 9am on Saturday morning, if you’re thinking of going somewhere new then post on the Facebook page as there may be other members planning on running at the same place as you! Wherever you are parkrunning – Don’t forget your barcode!

Sunday:

The Sunday Lookout run a try with Dick Newman and Emy Circuit. They say its the best run of the week but might be a bit biased! It’s a flexible run leaving from The Lookout at 9 am with different groups to suit a wide range of abilities. The three ‘Cs’ of Coffee, cake and chat are enjoyed in the cafe post-run.

Thanks for reading the Run Down, have a safe week of running and I’ll see you next week!

Please do let me know if you are doing any events, I can only report what I see on Strava and Facebook and I hope you appreciate there may be things I miss!

Ping me a message over the weekend and I will include it so others can see what we are doing and may be inspired to try a different event.
