Home Cross Country Volunteers:
As a club we run in the Thames Valley Cross Country League and as part of that we organise and host our very own cross-country event – this year’s event is on Sunday 28th November at Lord Wandsworth College, Hook.
WE NOW NEED YOUR HELP to ensure our event goes ahead successfully and safely, so that the good name of the club continues to thrive.
To host the cross country we need you to volunteer to help us in one (or more) of the following ways:
• Set up the course
• Make sandwiches for the race
• Set up the hospitality area
• Organise parking cars
• Marshal the race
• Serve tea, coffee, sandwiches, and cake
• Pack down the course
In total we have 90 roles that need filling across the weekend, this could be YOU OR MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY, this is your opportunity to GIVE BACK TO YOUR CLUB.
Throughout the cross-country season there are many opportunities for you to race, but for this, our home event, we put restrictions on who can run. Our Cross-Country Captains Nigel and Gabbi Bassett will email those they wish to see represent the club at this event – if you have received the Bassett’s email, please DO NOT volunteer to help, they need you! For everyone else, please continue to read this email and see what you need to do.
Any member who turns up on race day expecting to run and is not part of Nigel and Gabbi’s scoring team will be asked to volunteer; only the official scoring team will be permitted to run in the race.
Please complete this form if you want to volunteer: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScIu4xqhNw2Riwe5RSWacMa9Ej4wuqFAXfqsYHW6EFQneqKEw/viewform

Events from the past week:
Beachy Head Marathon:
Well done to Jonathan Taylor for completing the Beachy Head Marathon-I spoke with him about he found the event:
Last Saturday I ran the Beachy Head marathon for fourth time, this is my favourite race of all time and once again it was superb. Due to the torrential rain and flooding of the full marathon course, the organisers were forced to re-route the marathon so that we ran the half marathon course twice. This meant twice over four of the seven sisters and twice over Beachy Head, quite some challenge. This is certainly a very challenging race, even the first few miles are up a steep and slippery hill on the South Downs Way which just goes on and on. I saw a fellow runner take a tumble just in the first 100 yards and needed medical assistance!
What a start. Just when you think you’re done in, along comes the seven sisters and then a long climb up Beachy Head, this course takes no prisoners. The stunning views and scenery more than made up for all of the challenging climbs and terrain. The middle miles of the course down to Friston was really runnable too, so quite some miles ticked off at a reasonable pace. As usual the race was extremely well organised. It was well marshaled and the aid stations offered the usual mars bars, bananas and sausage rolls and plenty to drink. It was a dry, mild and calm day and the view across the cliffs and the sea was just perfect. So many people stopped to take it all in, take a selfie or some pictures. Beachy gives you a very generous 9 hour cut off, so there’s no rush to get round and you can enjoy your day. Another great thing about this race is just how friendly it is, I was chatting to fellow runners pretty much the entire time. At the end there was a decent medal, and food (jacket spud, sausage and beans!) I sat in the gardens and chatted to some fellow runners. It was another great day out and I will certainly be back next year.
Rushmoor Wellesley 10k:
Well done to Monica Burbidge, Alurie Dutton and Sue Hopkinson for completing the Rushmoor Wellesley 10k, I spoke with them about how they found the event:
On Sunday 24th October, Monica, Sue and I joined around 700 other runners to take part in the Rushmoor Wellesley 10k. I had already collected our numbers on the previous Wednesday (one of three opportunities to do this) from Aldershot Cricket Club so there was no worrying about queuing for numbers early on the morning of the event. There was a lovely atmosphere where we got there, with runners organised for a wide mass start that took us around the top end of the polo field and down through the avenue of trees. This ensured that we were well spread out before we reached the canal path which was quite narrow. From the canal we went up the tarmac road past the army golf club before going over the metal bridge into the Wellesley woodland. There were quite a lot of uneven patches and exposed tree roots through the woods so I was glad I wore my trail shoes. In this section we met up with Madeline Duncan Booth which was a pleasant surprise with lots of catching up to do. From the woods it was back along the canal until we got to a pathway which led up to the stadium and finish. This event is organised by the Blackwater Valley Runners aided by the local community and has such a great atmosphere. It is really well marshalled, mainly by members of the Gurkha community, who are all so encouraging. It is definitely one to do if you are in search of a friendly event in pleasant surroundings.
